One of the most significant technological disruptions in recent times was the release of OpenAI’s Chat GPT just a few months ago. This brought generative AI and artificial intelligence into the spotlight, sparking numerous discussions and articles about its impact on our jobs and the future of work.
Many people are concerned and wonder, “Will this technology replace my job?” Some may feel overwhelmed and believe that AI tools are too advanced. This is typical as most of the time there’s lots of hype surrounding new technologies. However, research indicates that such technological dispruptions eventually create more jobs, resulting in a net positive.
Benefits of ChatGPT
I have personally experimented with this technology and, like many others, find it highly beneficial and helpful. For instance, Chat GPT can function as your own virtual online assistant, summarizing articles, creating outlines, and generating creative ideas. When solving problems, relying solely on our own experiences can limit us and subject us to cognitive biases, leading to inaccurate interpretations and an incomplete understanding.
However, technologies like Chat GPT can access a vast amount of information available online and present a broader perspective thereby enabling us to solve problems more effectively. It’s important to note that when using Chat GPT, we should read and interpret the responses rather than blindly relying on them. But in general this tool can help us save time and produce better quality work.
The Right Mindset to Embrace New Technologies
Now, let’s discuss the mindset we should adopt when faced with technological disruptions or new technologies. I believe it is helpful to approach this topic with a positive and optimistic mindset. Instead of worrying about job loss or feeling anxious about how to use the technology, consider what are new opportunites that were not available before. Find a way to use the technology to enhance your job performance.
Furthermore, it is essential to have strong self-efficacy beliefs, which is a psychological concept introduced by Bandura. Self-efficacy refers to our belief in our own ability to achieve set goals. If you begin with the assumption that the technology is too overwhelming or that you can’t handle it, you will hinder your progress. However, if you have strong self-efficacy beliefs and believe in your ability to learn and grow (this aligns with having a growth mindset) you’re more likely to thrive in uncertain situations.
The story we tell ourselves plays an important role in how we navigate change. Tell yourself, “I’m able learn new things”. With a growth mindset you’ll be more resilient. Instead of feeling helpless, you’ll rise up to the challenge and actively look for ways to use the technology to your advantage. For instance, if you find ChatGPT difficult to understand, you’ll be empowered to seek assistance from someone who is adept at using AI.
Summary
It is crucial not to ignore what is happening. As mentioned earlier, this technological disruption will lead to the elimination of certain jobs while also creating new ones. However, as the saying goes…you won’t be replaced by artificial intelligence itself, but by those who know how to use it. Let’s strive to be among those who can effectively use this technology to enhance our work. Believe in your ability to adapt and seek opportunities within this disruption. As a result you’ll produce higher quality work and be more productive.
